James Pulliam
I was born in Henderson, North Carolina, May 13, 1936. I graduated from Henderson High School in 1954 and received a Wildlife Management degree from North Carolina State in 1958.
I started my career at the Mingo National Wildlife Refuge, MO in June 1958. In 1959 I transferred to the Upper Mississippi WFR, Wapello, IA, later to branch off as the Mark Twain NWR and was manager of the Louisa and Keithsburg Divisions of Mark Twain. In 1961 I moved the Area Acquisition Office, Aberdeen, SD as a wildlife biologist. In 1963 I moved to Webster, SD to manage the NE SD wetlands district.
In January 1964 I became manager of the Lacassine NWR, LA and in 1966 moved to the Central Office in the Branch of Programs, Division of Refuges. In 1970 I transferred to the Albuquerque RO as Asst. Supervisor for Operations, Refuges, then in 1973 moved back to DC as the Asst. Chief of the Refuge Division, and in May 1974 was named Chief of the Refuge Division.
In May 1975 I assumed the position of Acting Deputy Assoc. Director for Fish and Wildlife Management overseeing the Divisions of Animal Damage Control, Migratory Birds, Mammals and Non-Migratory Birds, Interpretation and Recreation, Law Enforcement, Realty, Refuges, the Alaska Claims Staff, and Youth Conservation Programs. I was named the Deputy Associate Director in April 1976.
In August 1979 I became the Deputy Assoc. Director for the National Wildlife Refuge System supervising the Divisions of Refuges, Realty, Youth Conservation Programs and the Alaska Native Claims staff..
In September 1981 I was named Acting Regional Director in Minneapolis and in February 1982 became Regional Director in the Southeast Region, Atlanta, GA. I retired in September 1994.
I received the Meritorious Service Award in 1979 and the Distinguished Service Award in 1994.
